Investing in Yourself: A Lesson Beyond the Wrestling Mat
This past weekend, I had the privilege of spending time with a dedicated group of wrestling officials in Georgia. Whenever I have the opportunity to speak with individuals who give so much of themselves to a sport they love, I walk away inspired.
Officiating wrestling is not easy. It requires preparation, discipline, decision-making under pressure, and a commitment to continual improvement. In many ways, the challenges officials face are no different than the challenges we all face in our personal and professional lives.
During our time together, I shared several principles that have become foundational to my own journey in wrestling, leadership, coaching, and life.
Invest in Yourself First
One of the most important lessons I've learned is that personal growth is never an expense—it's an investment.
Whether it's reading a book, attending a clinic, seeking mentorship, improving your health, or developing a new skill, the greatest return on investment will always come from investing in yourself. Too often, we spend our time taking care of everyone else while neglecting our own development.
The reality is simple: you cannot consistently give what you do not possess.
If we want to perform at a higher level, lead others effectively, and make a meaningful impact, we must first commit to our own growth.
Systems Beat Motivation
Motivation is great when it's present, but it is unreliable.
High performers don't depend on motivation. They depend on systems.
The most successful people I've encountered have routines, habits, and systems that guide their daily actions. They don't wake up every morning wondering whether they feel like doing the work. Their systems have already made that decision for them.
Success is rarely found in dramatic moments. It is usually found in the small disciplines repeated consistently over time.
Whether it's your fitness, your career, your relationships, or your officiating, strong systems create strong outcomes.
Trust Is the Foundation
We also discussed the importance of trust.
Trust is one of the most valuable currencies we possess.
As officials, trust is earned through consistency, preparation, integrity, and professionalism. The same is true in our personal lives.
Trust is built when our actions align with our words.
It grows when people know what to expect from us.
And it strengthens when we consistently demonstrate character, even when no one is watching.
The strongest teams, organizations, and relationships are built upon trust.
Bringing It All Together: The AOC Model
These concepts connect directly to the High Performance Living framework that I call AOC:
Awareness – Understanding where you are and what needs attention.
Ownership – Taking responsibility for your actions, choices, and outcomes.
Commitment – Consistently doing the work required to become the person you want to be.
When we become aware, take ownership, and remain committed, we create the foundation for sustainable high performance.
High performance isn't reserved for elite athletes, executives, or champions. It is available to anyone willing to invest in themselves, build effective systems, and earn trust through consistent action.
Thank You, Georgia Officials
I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Georgia wrestling officials, especially Bud Hennebaul, for the opportunity to share this message. Your passion for the sport, commitment to excellence, and willingness to continue learning are exactly what make our wrestling community stronger.
I enjoyed every minute of our time together and appreciate the work you do to serve our athletes, coaches, and the sport of wrestling.
Keep investing in yourselves. Keep building systems that support success. Keep earning trust.
The results will follow!
