Knocking the Road Off: A High Performance Approach to Travel Knocking the Road Off: A High Performance Approach to Travel
There’s a term in wrestling we’ve used for years—“knocking the road off.”
It’s simple: travel takes something out of you… and if you don’t reset, it shows.
This past month, I was on the road four straight weekends—flights, hotels, long days, late nights. That environment makes it easy to let your standards slip.
But if you’re serious about High Performance, travel isn’t an excuse… it’s a test.
Travel Doesn’t Break You—It Reveals You
The road exposes your habits.
When your schedule is off…
When your sleep is inconsistent…
When your food options aren’t ideal…
You quickly find out if you’re living by standards—or just convenience.
Most people rely on motivation.
High performers rely on systems.
Awareness Drives the Adjustment
For me, it starts with paying attention.
I monitor my HRV, my sleep, and how my body is responding. Not obsessively—but intentionally.
Because awareness gives me feedback.
If my HRV drops or my sleep dips, I adjust:
More recovery
Better hydration
Cleaner nutrition
During heavy travel stretches, I’ll also adjust creatine.
Normally I’m in the 3–5 gram range. But when stress and fatigue increase, I’ll bump that closer to 10 grams for a short period. There’s good evidence that creatine supports not just muscle, but cellular energy and cognitive performance—especially under stress or lack of sleep.
That’s not random. That’s awareness in action.
Ownership on the Road
Travel isn’t perfect—and it’s not supposed to be.
That’s where ownership shows up.
I may not have my normal gym… but I still move.
I may not have my normal meals… but I make better choices.
I may not have my routine… but I create one.
That might look like:
A quick hotel workout
Extra steps in the airport
Getting outside when possible
Adjusting intensity instead of forcing it
And when I can, I’ll take a few minutes to get grounded—literally.
If there’s grass, I’ll go barefoot or just stand and slow things down. There’s some emerging research behind it, but more importantly—it helps me reset.
High Performance isn’t about perfect conditions.
It’s about ownership in imperfect ones.
Commitment Shows Up in the Small Things
This is where “knocking the road off” really happens.
Not in one big reset—but in small, consistent actions:
Prioritizing sleep
Hydrating
Moving
Being intentional with food
One of the simplest tools I use is breathwork.
The 4-7-8 method:
Inhale 4 seconds
Hold 7 seconds
Exhale 8 seconds
It helps shift your system out of fight-or-flight and back into recovery. Research supports slow breathing for improving HRV and reducing stress.
It’s simple.
It’s portable.
And it works.
Routines Anchor You
When everything around you changes, routines matter more.
Simple anchors:
Morning movement
Breathwork
A walk
A consistent wind-down
Nothing complicated—but it keeps your system steady.
High Performance Travels With You
One of the biggest shifts I’ve made:
High Performance doesn’t turn on and off based on the environment.
It travels with you.
The road used to take more out of me than it should have.
Now, it challenges me to stay aligned with my standards.
That’s what “knocking the road off” really means.
Final Thought
Travel will always stress your system.
But with awareness, ownership, and commitment—you can manage it, recover from it, and grow through it.
Because High Performance isn’t an event.
It’s a way of living… wherever you are.
